Channel House
Channel House is a new, eclectic residential community and the first ground-up development in the North Hills Innovation District. The NHID is a mixed-use neighborhood in Raleigh built along Big Branch Channel, designed as a collection of residential, commercial, retail, and green spaces that bring together the city and the outdoors in the same footprint.
Being the first in the neighborhood came with a specific brief. For this residence, Kane Realty developed a name with weight and history. The name, Channel House, feels like an inn or a social club that has been around for over 100 years.
But the people moving in aren't joining a stuffy country club. They're young professionals in design, tech, and entrepreneurship with new ideas and fresh perspectives. So our worked needed to celebrate both: honor the heritage in the name while exuding the vibrance of the community.
So we designed a brand in two layers.
The first is classical: a stencil serif wordmark and a CH monogram paired with regal maroon, navy, and gold. The second is contemporary: a geometric sans-serif wordmark, an abstract mark built from two arching forms to symbolize the channel, and a fun illustration of a crane who lives near the creek. Soft pink, teal, and orange add fresh colors to the palette.
Neither layer works alone. The stencil wordmark without the sans would read like a boring institution. The sans without the stencil would read like every other new-build apartment. Together the two build a brand that feels like it’s always been there, while ushering in the eclectic community that’s moving in.
In addition to the visual identity, we designed and installed a series of hand-painted murals across the property inspired by the local landscape, wildlife, and community. Check out the murals here.
